Facebook Live Tutorial & Facebook Donations

July 27, 2016

We did our first Facebook Live video and it got over 44,000 views in just a couple of days! We had trouble getting our pages connected though, so here is what we did with the help of another ally. — Dawn Hawkins, National Center on Sexual Exploitation

To do the video, we used the Facebook Pages Manager app on an iPhone (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/facebook-pages-manager/id514643583?mt=8). I looked and the Facebook Pages Manager for Android phones seems to work very similarly. I haven’t found a way to do a Facebook Live video on a laptop or desktop computer.
In the Pages app, open up to your page and touch the icon to “Publish” (looks like a pencil over a square piece of paper, near the middle of the screen on the left side). When the next screen comes up, just above the keyboard is a line that says “Add to your post” and has three icons. The one you want for Facebook Live is the red silhouette with (sort of) two halos around it.
Tap it and you’ll get a screen with the feed from your camera (you can switch from front camera to back camera or vice versa) and a description of Live Video on Facebook.
Click continue and you’ll be prompted to enter a description for your live video.
The next step is to tap the “Go Live” blue bar. You’ll get a 3, 2, 1 countdown and you’ll be on live.
Here are some pictures of the various screens and icons: https://media.fb.com/2015/12/17/live-for-verified-pages/
The image is cropped square by Facebook, so it doesn’t matter which way you hold the phone. We were sitting at my kitchen table, so we used a mini tripod on the table (http://amzn.to/29X9Oth) and a cell phone holder (http://amzn.to/2agHTAH). I think we’re going to upgrade to one of these tripods (http://amzn.to/29Jm5O9) because they give you more options (e.g., you could wrap it around the top of a chair or a banister).
I just found this list of tips by Facebook, some of which I wish I had seen before (https://live.fb.com/tips/).

On another topic, you mentioned that you verified your page, which is great. We just went through a few additional steps so that we can begin receiving donations through Facebook. You should be able to access the steps to setup your “Donations Account” at this link: https://www.facebook.com/donate/signup I figure the more places and ways people can give the better.
